WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

What is functional medicine

Why do people get sick? That is the true question to functional medicine doctor.

Due to many factors such as the nature of work that we have and the types of food we eat, our body condition deteriorates over a period of time.

We got subjected to medical conditions that when not properly addressed at early signs could result to the fatal endpoint of our lives.

To date, various diseases are being diagnosed among people and one of them is diabetes. With the growing need to address this, many medical practitioners proposed ways of treating illnesses like the use of functional medicine.

What is Functional Medicine?

Of the medical terms widely used nowadays, functional medicine is probably one of those that are referred to with misconceptions.

Functional medicine is actually a type of system whereby disease is identified and treated by targeting its main or root cause.

It focuses on the roles played by a person’s interaction to his environment and its effect on his body system in relevance to his medical conditions.

Though this term had been defined vaguely for the past times, it could be associated with the process of treating a patient in connection with the ideas of biochemistry and physiology.

What are the Principles Involved in Functional Medicine?

Like many other types of medicines and treatments, functional medicine is viewed under varying principles.

Based on its idea, people are genetically and biochemically unique and different from one another.

This means that each of the patients must be treated according to his own condition and a specific approach must be implemented. This further suggests that a person could be healed through more personalized health care.

Functional medicine also suggests the scheme of a medicinal treatment that is highly based on science. Thus, a medical approach to a patient must be aligned with his relationship to the environment and network.

According to functional medicine principles, a patient’s body has the capacity to think and perform self-regulation. Therefore, it has the ability to have a dynamic balance of its systems.

Functional medicine also states that health is not just the absence of disease but also a state of immense vitality.

What are the Functional Medicine Pros and Cons?

While there are still a lot of things to be explained about functional medicine, there are already researches that state the two sides of this medical approach.

Included on the list of the pros or advantages of functional medicine is its ability to make the treatment and healing process more enjoyable on the part of the patient.

This is as compared to other types of medical techniques. Too, health professionals also believe that with the implementation of functional medicine, the patient would still allow a patient to eat fatty foods.

Above all, since functional medicine targets the root of disease, it can promise long term solutions to the patient’s condition.

This is done by helping the patient to avoid exposure to harmful elements within his environments. With this, patients are being encouraged to fight and get cured for themselves.

Functional medicine calls for changes in the patient’s lifestyle which is probably one of the hardest things for a person to do. This is one of its disadvantages. It would be hard to implement this type of medical approach especially to patients who are afraid of making changes.

Treating diseases such as diabetes and getting your way back to a healthy version of yours could take time.

You may be asked to have weight loss programs or even have to try effective home remedies for diabetes. It may require a lot of effort from you and you may find it very tiring. But, you do not have to worry much about this.

Thanks for pointing out that functional medicine focuses on the roles played by a person’s interaction to their environment. In my opinion, this should be a standard thing to consider whenever you are being treated for something. I am thinking about going to see a functional medicine doctor, and knowing that that person is also taking into account where and how I live would, I think, make me feel like they were treating me as a person and not just another patient.
